Vocabulary

Diction: style of speaking or writing as dependent upon            choice of words
ex: The student's poor diction prevented the teacher from understanding her paper.
Theme: the central topic a text treats
ex: After the walk, they returned to the theme of American values.
Mood: a state or quality of feeling at a particular time
ex: After she aced her test, she was in a jolly mood the rest of the day.
Tone: quality or character of sound
ex: From the tone of her voice I could tell she was very angry.
Apotheosis: the elevation of a person to the rank of a god
ex: When she walked down the aisle in her wedding gown everyone thought she was the apotheosis of beauty.
Exculpate: to clear from a charge of guilt or fault of blame
ex: The woman was exculpated for the murder of her husband because there wasn't enough evidence to prove that she was guilty.
Syntax: the study or rules of the formation of grammatical sentence in language
ex: The editing program will highlight any sentences containing inaccurate syntax use.
Faux pas: an embarrassing social error
